When I picked the two-hour walking tour today I barely noticed the title, Reykjavik Walking Tour - Walk with a Viking. It was reasonable, promised to pass by the major sites and give handy tips for shopping and eating (both favorite pastimes of mine).

On the way to the meeting point, I grabbed the 'national food of Iceland', a hotdog with sweet mustard, sweet ketchup, crunchy onions and some kind of onion relish. Interesting, but I think I prefer a good old-fashioned ballpark dog with ketchup and mustard.

As soon as I spied the tour guide, I remembered the description and it was pretty darn accurate. He stood out as our Viking! He seemed a bit grumpy and slow at the beginning, which could be because he looked and sounded like he just got out of bed. I was a bit concerned when the sites he started pointing out a few things in the square-

"This is where I hung out when I was a kid"

"I think that is the oldest tree over there"

"I used to be a fisherman but I have crap knees so I give tours instead"

However, as he got going (and shook off the cobwebs from the night before), he picked up the pace and gave a great tour. He walked us around Iceland (and shared his ancestral migration around the county) on a large terrain map. It is amazing how little of, yet how much given the terrain, Iceland is lived in.

Our Viking shared all the major Reykjavik sites with many personal stories and his favorites for food and drink. I even tried out a happy hour suggestion, where I heard stories about their upcoming elections and met Panda the bar dog.
