Bologna, Italy

Ah, Bologna, the city nicknamed La Grassa, meaning 'the fat one', is known for its delicious food and as the 'Learned City' for being home to the oldest university in the world. This was my first time in Bologna, but it certainly will not be my last.

We took a quick food tour to learn a bit more about the delicacies of the city and have a look around. Food tours are the best because you get a bit of history, see the sights, and get to eat. All my favorite things in one! My favorite on this tour was tigelle filled with pesto lard. But the stop at the osteria was also filled with yummy breads, mortadella, other meats, cheese, and wine!

Our apartment, found through Booking.com (Dimora Fossalta, a pochi passi da Piazza Maggiore), was amazing for seven people. Unlike Rome, we each had our own space for the 3 nights, which was welcomed by all. It looked over the square, which was amazing the first day but was even better on the weekend when they stop all traffic to become a pedestrian zone. It was a treat to wake up to live music on Saturday morning, especially for our resident musician. It did, however, come with revelers at all times of night and morning.

Travel Nugget: When choosing your place to stay, remember that to be in the center of things can be good and bad. Music and people in the morning may mean music and people at night! Choose wisely for your sleep habits, remembering that Europe is typically a late-night and late-rise kind of place!

Bologna didn't seem as big and crowded as other major Italy destinations. However, between day trips and a bit of rain, I didn't get to explore the city as much as I would have liked so I will be back to dive in deeper another time. Check out a few highlights below.
